Abstract:

Objective

To analyze reflux parameters by means of combined multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH (MII-pH) monitoring in Barrett′s esophagus(BE), reflux esophagitis(RE)and non-erosive esophageal reflux disease(NERD)patients with typical heartburn and/or regurgitation.

Methods

We analyzed the MII-pH monitoring information of GERD patients (≥18 years) with typical gastroesophageal reflux symptoms(heartburn or/and regurgitation) and abnormal results of MII-pH monitoring. Then GERD patients were subgrouped as NERD, RE or BE. Numbers of GER parameters were compared between groups using SPSS software.

Results

Totally 103 GERD patients (15 BE patients, 32 RE and 56 NERD, confirmed by MII-pH monitoring) off medication were included. There were no differences among groups about their sex, age and BMI.Using Mann-Whitney analysis, it was found that numbers of DeMeester scores, percentage of time pH<4 and long reflux episodes were significantly higher in RE and BE patients than NERD patients.BE patients had much more total reflux episodes, but there were no differences among three groups on impedance parameters.

Conclusion

Compared with NERD, acid refluxes were more important for the pathogenesis of RE and BE.
